During my trip to the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands I saw dozens of bird species. Following are my best birding photos (see here for other animal photos).

Water birds, including pink roseate spoonbills, red-necked jabirus and all-white great egrets, fly off after being disturbed

Two jabirus stand in a pantanal swamp

Two hyacinth macaws resting on a tree branch. I also observed green-winged macaws

A bird of prey, probably a hawk or falcon, watching from a tree

This owl, possibly a ferruginous pygmy-owl, happily stayed on a tree near Pousada Arara Azul

A toco toucan. I also saw another toucan species, probably the chestnut-eared aracari

Spider webs surround this red-crested cardinal

A wattled jacana wading through a Pantanal swamp

This unidentified bird was spotted next to the river

The oropendola creates hanging basket-like nests

Ringed kingfishers (one pictured) and green kingfishers were prevalent around the river

Five black-bellied whistling ducks swimming single file with a sixth non-aligned duck at the rear

A savannah hawk perched at the apex of a tree

A small bird, possibly a finch, near a purslane plant adjacent the Campo Grando-Corumba highway
